What’s The Difference Between a Voice Teacher and a Vocal Coach?
In today’s blog, I’ll be talking about some differences between a voice teacher and a vocal coach.
Certainly, the two terms are often interchangeable when it comes to students receiving voice lessons, but there are some differences. The semantics of “voice” and “vocal” are the same thing.
Here are some key differences between a vocal coach and a voice teacher:
Voice Teachers
- Voice teachers work with students on the the foundation of how to sing with technique.
- Beginning singers typically tend to study with voice teachers first.
- Voice teachers work with students on any level.
- Focus on the importance of a student’s vocal health and breath support.
- Focus on range, pitch accuracy, register and resonance of the student’s voice.
- Head voice and chest voice are addressed.
- Focus on posture (alignment), breath and tone.
Vocal Coaches
- Focused on singers who may already have know how to sing with technique.
- Vocal coaches often provide more advanced tips and techniques in performances.
- Focus on piano accompaniment, working on diction and expression.
- Vocal coaches come more to mind when it comes to people asking for voice lessons.
- Working on performance techniques, showmanship and stage presence.
- Professional singers may often consult with a vocal coach in between performances or tours.
The North Fulton School of Music describes the differences between the two here.
Voice teachers and vocal coaches are indeed very similar in knowledge of singing and performance. That is not to say that a voice teacher can’t coach and a vocal coach can’t teach. The reason this is important is because one has different specializations that the other, depending on the genre or singing style.
Important Note: One method is not necessarily better than the other. It depends on the qualifications the voice instructor has and what kind of an instructor the voice student needs. Next time I will talk about what a student should look for in a voice teacher or vocal coach.
