Why do we love singing and why is it good for us?

Singing is a wonderful, natural thing to do! The human voice can do so many interesting and unique things. There many, many different studies and published journals out there on the benefits of singing. I will highlight just how singing is good for you physically, emotionally, mentally and socially.
Please Note: I am not a medically licensed professional and I will be citing my sources on the different kinds of benefits of singing from various articles and resources. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence on the benefits of singing.
1. Physical Benefits of Singing
Singing allows you to develop stronger breath support in the respiratory system, it allows the blood in the human body to warm up the muscles and it energizes you to be alert and aware. It is also a great source of stress relief according to Healthline.
Singing is great for memory, according to Harvard Health. Songs are often times memorized in choirs or solo performances and singing allows you a lot of practice time to memorize the words, rhythm, melody or harmony (depending on which voice part you are singing for melody or harmony. More blogs on voice types later).
Singing can help prolong life and boosts the immune system according to Barbershop Harmony Society. In my own personal experience, I often feel physically better after a productive choir rehearsal!
2. Emotional Benefits of Singing
According to Sing Ireland, it can create a positive, joyful and uplifting experience when people singing. Anytime I am singing in choir, or driving in my car or just at home by myself, I feel a lot of emotions depending on what the emotion of the song is emoting, but I feel a sense of relief and/or happiness whenever I sing.
It reduces a stress hormone called cortisol, especially when you’re in a fun, positive environment according to TakeLessons. It might not take all stressors away, but it can certainly help and keeps you focused!
Singing in general makes you feel better and it releases brain chemicals, endorphins, serotonin and dopamine during and after singing, according to Opera North.
3. Mental Benefits of Singing
I always feel more vibrant and youthful when I am involved in music, and recently I found this quick article by Johns Hopkins Medicine that definitely confirms that music is good for you mentally and your brain!
Singing can reduce anxiety, depression along with stress, according to Start Singing Today. It is great aid in mental health. There are a lot of connections with both the mental and emotional benefits of singing.
4. Social Benefits to Singing
Singing releases a feel good hormone called oxytocin according to Healthline, when people sing together as it creates a sense of belonging and connectedness.
Singing allows you to express yourself, according to Opera North, which I definitely find to be true for me.
Singing gives you more self-confidence and creates more friendships according to Vocalist. For me personally, this is absolutely true because I joined ΣΑI, which is a professional music fraternity and the sisterhood created many friendships and gave so much more confidence to be a better leader and musician.
Overall, there are a multitude of incredible resources on the benefits of singing. Singing is my passion and I want to share quality, accurate information on singing and the human voice. There is a lot of subjectivity in the music business world, which makes it even more interesting!
